Signs That You Need a Breast Implant Revision

In recent years, it has become common for women to get breast implants. The purposes vary from medical reasons for breast reconstruction after cancer to augmentation to uplift the chest. The implants are made from various materials, but primarily doctors use silicone-built implants for their patients.

Regardless of whether you’ve got implants for medical purposes or cosmetic surgeries, most people are told to get their implants replaced after 10-15 years. However, there may be many reasons that patients may have to get the replacement before time. Sometimes, people do not notice the change and may develop severe medical complications.

Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of reasons stating when you might need a breast implant replacement or a revisionary surgery. So, what’s the wait for? Let’s read on!

Reasons For A Breast Implant Replacement

1. You’re experiencing pain or discomfort.

Breast implants do not have to feel unnatural or artificial. The patients do not feel any pain or discomfort wearing breast implants. However, if there is any pain, it may indicate that you require revision surgery.

According to Dr. Nick Vial, a plastic surgeon in Bend, OR, patients who experience pain with silicone breast implants may signify that it has ruptured or leaked. In addition, it may also mean damaged lymph nodes, capsular contracture, pinched nerves, and more.

In cases where there is no severe issue causing pain, some of you may also feel enough discomfort to disrupt your daily lives, especially if the implants are too large or poorly placed. Therefore, you must consult your healthcare provider if you ever find pain or discomfort.

2. Implant has Bottomed Out

There are many cases wherein the implants bottom out or gradually fall below the breast crease. In some cases, tissues & skin cannot adequately support the breast implants. Although, this condition is common in people who get heavy breast implants.

Yet, it is also seen in patients who get pregnant after getting their implants. In addition, skin laxity due to age is also among the primary reasons causing bottoms out. One of the main signs of bottom out is when you see the nipple moving upward, whereas the implants fall lower. In addition, if you notice and feel the outline of the implant, it probably bottoms out, and you need to undergo revision surgery as soon as possible.

3. You feel a Rotating Implant

It is common for breast implants to settle in a different position than originally placed. However, it should not move dramatically from one place to another. If it does, it is medically called implant displacement. Interestingly, there are many ways that an implant can move or rotate

Simply put, if the implant is too big, it may experience lateral displacement( moves too far away from the chest midline). Likewise, in Symmastia, implants move into the middle of the chest. It happens when too much tissue is removed near the breastbone.

Likewise, there could be other movements that a patient may only be able to tell if they notice an uneven breast appearance. If you experience such displacement, you must get it checked with your health consultant.

Bottom Line

Apart from medical reasons, there could be cosmetic reasons too. For instance, you might want to resize your breast. Regardless of the reasons, you must get in touch with your healthcare provider to understand the root cause of the issue and get hold of it.
