Is a Sober Lifestyle Possible?

Alcohol and drugs seem to be easily available nowadays. Drinking and recreational drug use are pretty common activities and can serve as a default socializing event for many.

With such widespread use of alcohol and drugs, it begs the question, “Can you live a sober lifestyle?” In short, the answer is yes. While it might be more difficult if alcohol and drugs weren’t so heavily marketed and socially acceptable, living a sober lifestyle is possible.

Let’s go over some of the ways you can achieve a sober lifestyle.

How to Achieve A Sober Lifestyle

Surround yourself with likeminded people

One way to achieve a sober lifestyle is to surround yourself with like-minded people. This could be friends, family, or even an online community of people who share your values.

You want to surround yourself with people who will help keep you in check if you feel you are starting to slip. You need people to hold you accountable for staying sober when times get tough.

Having this support system will help you live a sober lifestyle and foster healthy habits. Drinking and using drugs are generally not healthy activities to engage in, and removing them from your life can improve your health.

Find alternative forms of entertainment

Another way to make a sober lifestyle work is finding alternative entertainment forms.

While drinking or getting high might be the default way for some people to have fun, it’s important for you to move beyond this mindset. You want to find other outlets for your time and energy.

Hobbies are great ways to stay busy without relying on substances. You can also find activities that have a social element, like going to the movies or joining a club.

Seek help when needed

When looking at ways to live a sober lifestyle, the first key is to be honest with yourself about what you want. While some may simply enjoy drinking and recreational drug use, it’s an addiction or dependency for others.

Addiction and substance abuse are serious problems that require help from qualified professionals. If you find yourself in a situation where you overuse alcohol or drugs, then the best way to live a sober lifestyle is to get help.

Having an addiction can be incredibly isolating, but there are people who want to help you overcome your addiction.

Don’t let the small stuff discourage you

Life isn’t always going to go according to plan. There are constant curveballs thrown at all of us, but it’s important not to let this derail your sober lifestyle.

You want to avoid letting mishaps get you down or make you feel that your life is missing something. If you keep the right mindset, you can overcome any obstacles in your path.

It’s also important not to get discouraged when other people don’t seem to respect your decision to live a sober lifestyle. While it might make some envious or feel uncomfortable around you at times, that doesn’t mean that you’re doing anything wrong. You’re following a lifestyle you believe is best for you, and people should respect that.

Distance yourself from unsupportive people

If you feel like certain people aren’t supportive of your decision to start living a sober lifestyle, it might be time to distance yourself from them.

If they’re still using substances and pressuring you to do the same, it’s only going to make your life harder. It might not be easy at first, but you need to remember this is for your own good.

Don’t forget, if they truly cared about you, they would support your decision to live sober.

What it all comes down to

You are ultimately the only person who has to live with your decisions. Taking control of your life and making positive changes for yourself demonstrates courage that others might not have, so cherish this about yourself.

It’s never too late to start living a sober lifestyle, so consider what you want out of your life and if alcohol or drugs could be holding you back.
